Just recently the Intuit Team has offered an alternative program for Certified Pro Advisors and Certified Solutions Providers who are interested in working with clients remotely outside of using such service providers as LogMeIn or GoToMyPC.  Below is a link to their announcement.

Speaking from the standpoint of how it can help my clients, it's something I'm going to review with each client separately and work towards because I myself am working towards a more greener business model for Bookkeeping-Results, LLC.  One of the key items to consider, is how much control are you willing to give up when going to a client's location?  Yes it's all about control when you visit a client, because you're used to getting in the car, making that commute, visit and check up on how things have been, looking at actual invoices, receipts, etc.  I'm someone who's guilty of it, because I love looking at paper!  However, there are alternatives.  Consider having the paperwork scanned and e-mailed over.  Do you need to go in there on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, or can you alternate to just doing an actual visit once a month and do the rest remotely?

Some people charge for travel time, charge for mileage, but I'm someone who hasn't because I prefer the one-on-one customer interaction and personal service I bring.  However, I'm not recommending you eliminate it altogether.  Nothing will ever replace face-to-face communications, but in order to not only save money and time, you're helping your family and friends around you by reducing your consumption on resources.  It's Economics 101, the law of supply and demand.  When you consume less, prices go down.  When you consume more, prices go up.  Save some green today!
